In 2017, the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities invited Patrizia Piacentini from the University of Milan to lead an excavation and preservation mission in the area surrounding the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan in Aswan, which was threatened by illegal excavations. As a result, a joint Italian- Egyptian mission was established. This mission has geo-located and cataloged over 300 tombs, conducting excavations on some of them between 2019 and early 2024, achieving significant results. In 2023, the mission was recognized for its merit and included among the ASOR- Affiliated Archaeological Projects by the American Society of Overseas Research. The investigation has revealed substantial typological differences in the location and structure of the tombs, offering valuable insights from historical, chronological, and social perspectives. The tombs date back to a period spanning from the 6th century BC to the 3rd century AD.

In particular, tomb AGH026, an underground burial with a descending staircase and two burial chambers constructed at different times, contained more than 45 individuals, many of whom were women and children. The inscribed and/or painted materials discovered in the tomb suggest the high social status of the original tomb owner and his family. Tomb AGH032, topped by a likely cult structure, is also of significant importance.
In the north-western area of the concession, a dozen overlapping terraces have been identified, with adjacent rock-cut tombs opened on each level, preceded by a small courtyard enclosed by raw bricks. Tombs AGH033 (on an upper level), AGH034 (on a middle level), AGH035, AGH036 (on a lower level) have been excavated; further levels will be explored in future missions

In situ anthropological analyses have been conducted to reconstruct the biological profiles and make pathological diagnoses of the individuals buried in the tombs, with over 100 individuals studied to date. Some bone and mummified remains have been 3D reproduced using a portable scanner. Medical imaging analyses have also been carried out, including X-rays of certain mummies using a portable radiological instrument on-site, as well as CT scans at Aswan University Hospital. These analyses have provided valuable information about burial practices and the individuals discovered. Further chemical, physical, and imaging analyses will be performed in upcoming missions.

The materials, which include numerous cartonnages, stretchers, wooden statuettes, and ceramics, show strong parallels with those found in the tombs of the Priests of Philae on the Island of Hesa, as well as in Lower Nubia and the necropolises of the western desert oases, particularly those of Dakhla and Kharga. Since 2020, the site has been undergoing improvements, with the installation of water and electricity, providing partial lighting.
Additionally, many tombs have been secured and closed with iron doors to ensure their protection

Conclusions
Since 2019, EIMAWA has been investigating the necropolis associated with the Aga Khan Mausoleum, located on the western bank of the Nile, opposite Aswan. As excavations have progressed, it has become evident that the necropolis was developed according to a planned layout, with distinct areas featuring various types of burials. It was in 2024 that it became clear that the necropolis is unique in Egypt. While Egyptian necropolises were usually constructed on two or three levels to accommodate many burials over a long period of time, the builders of the Aswan necropolis outfitted it with no fewer than 10 levels. The team discovered that, while the top levels were reserved for wealthy people, including the chief of the Egyptian army in the 2nd century BC, the lower levels explored in 2024 were used to bury members of the middle class.
The project aims to expand and further develop the research already undertaken, focusing on the extensive area south of the Aga Khan Mausoleum, where surveys have revealed an extension of the necropolis. Upcoming missions will include archaeological excavations to confirm the findings detected using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Multi-Channel Analysis of Surface Waves (MASW).
Moreover, the project aims to connect the mapping of necropolises already investigated on the western bank of Aswan, revealing a complex chronological pattern of burials spanning from the Predynastic Period to the 26th Dynasty. Particular attention will be devoted to uncovering and analyzing productive activities related to the necropolis, including pottery workshops, mummification facilities, and temporary housing and food production sites. Additionally, the project seeks to explore connections with burial sites on Elephantine Island and Hesa Island, offering a more comprehensive understanding of the funerary landscape of ancient Aswan.
